Description

This coffee was grown by Katherin and her family in Mozonte, Nueva Segovia which is near the highest points in Nicaragua. This region is well known for its excellent quality coffee, typically grown on small family-owned and run farms. Katherin’s farm is nearly 10 acres on fertile sandy soil rich in clay and loam providing the perfect growing conditions for coffee. They grow Catimor, red and yellow Catuai, Maragogype, and Caturra varieties of coffee beneath the shade of guava, lemon, orange, avocado, and oak trees. They also grow vegetables which are sold at the local market.

Katherin hand picks the coffee herself, drying it slowly on raised beds for two weeks. At such high altitude this slow drying gives great flavour in the cup. After drying the coffee is processed at a dry mill,  Cafetos de Segovia in Ocotal, which is owned by sisters Martha and Ana who also grow coffee after inheriting some farms from their father. Their family lost over 70 hectares of land during the Nicaraguan revolution from 1975-1979 when it was siezed by the government, forcing them to flee to the USA. Now the two sisters grow coffee on their own farms and through their mill, provide processing services to surrounding coffee growers, as well as operating greenhouses where they grow experimental and delicate lots.

Cafetos de Segovia submits lots to the national Cup of Excellence every year, and always ranks highly.
